But which joystick? It comes down to your budget and preference more than anything else.
I've heard you should also watch out for spring tension. For example, the T16000M requires way more force to operate than something like X52 or X56. Many players prefer it that way, many dislike it.
With that being said, most will tell you that the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS sticks are THE BEST bang for your buck.
People have complained that the Thrustmaster doesn't have enough buttons on it ( 12 ) BUT its been said that if you hold down the focus button you can choose 11 more commands! So that's really 33 buttons on it not counting you can hit the preset button and have 33 more at your command.
The fact that T16000M is one of the most popular and versatile sticks is enough information you need. Obviously defects happen, for every product. But it is commonly agreed that it's a reliable and very functional stick for it's money.

Also, if you would like a HOTAS that has a super nice metal construction with a ton of buttons and high quality springs, you want a warthog.
Remember, your VR extra accessories are an investment. A warthog will pay off in the long run. Especially if you are planning to use it for many thousands of hours, and you want it to still work as new.
